WIP: children’s book illustration

Reading time:

1–2 minutes

My mother used to read me an illustrated book of the rhyme “over in the meadow”, but I couldn’t find any editions with captivating imagery for my extremely short-of-patience daughter.

It’s taken us until summer this year (her third year of life) for us be able to read entire stories to her as it is – the art style is very important in whether or not she is engaged.

So I decided to try and make my own. I’m “learning by doing”, since I’m not an “illustrator” (beyond using adobe illustrator for branding and icon design often), and a few tutorials here and there) and even less of an artist. But it’s fun and challenging to learn drawing in procreate without all the line smoothing and perfection that comes from vector tools.

By far the hardest thing for me is composition. Finding a way of laying out the elements and making it engaging.. I really appreciate how easy illustrators make this look.

Today I’ve been drafting the sixth illustration: 6 crows.

Crows 6, work in progress.

It’s frustrating to leave it like this, unfinished. But this is real life, and I don’t have unlimited free time.
