I’m a canva mom. Design is how I relax and unwind. Having the app on my phone means I can zap designs to my wireless printer whenever there’s a lul.
This design started as a quick memory card game for my daughter and me to play, but then I realised it would work for a simplified game of Go Fish (simplified because I have to cut all the cards out and didn’t want to have to do cutouts for entire suites of cards)
‘Go Fish’ works well for developing language because it makes kids ask for the cards they need. And when it comes to having more of something and especially winning, kids will ask.
If they don’t know the words yet, it becomes a fun way to learn! It also has repeated sentences like “do you have a____?” Which gives kids with language delays or would-be bilingual kids plenty of practice asking for something.
You can add different ways to ask for cards like “I would like a…” or “I need a ….” as they develop. You can also have fun asking questions about what the characters are doing, or describing the cards. “Oh look at this ghost! He’s holding a pumpkin!”.
For younger siblings, these cards also work as a memory game. Just make sure to print on thick paper – over 80 gsm at least – so you can’t see the design through the paper.
I sent the files over to the local printing shop across the road and they did a great job for just €2.50!
My daughter loved playing this game, so I thought I’d make a cover and some instructions to share it in the parent whatsapp group, and another in english for my family. Two languages. Two files.
The Spanish language one has a vocabulary and phrasing section for kids who are learning english – with translations. If you’re in the reverse situation, feel free to download both files and refer to the last section in the Spanish pfd for the Spanish vocab and phrasing guide.
Obviously, I’m not great at writing in Spanish (I’m using a lot of help from chat GPT in writing the document), so please go gentle on the feedback, but do point out any mistakes I’ve made so I can correct them.
If you’d like to say thank you, consider buying me a coffee or supporting me on patreon for a while.
Thanks!
